Ask most anyone and they can tell you that Valentine's Day falls on February 14th. Valentine's is a special day, because everyone enjoys being appreciated and loved. However, if you ask most anyone why we celebrate Valentine's Day, you may not get as sure a response.
Truth be told, scholars are not quite sure who exactly was St. Valentine. There are three possible scenarios: 1. He was a priest during third century Rome who wedded couples despite the Emperor's decree that single men could not marry in order to conscript them into the military. 2. He came to the rescue of many Christians when they were being persecuted by the Roman empire. 3. He was a prisoner who fell in love while imprisoned and sent the first "Valentine" to his lover, signing it "from your Valentine."
Regardless of the historicity of Valentine's Day, the person who was Valentine certainly characterized many of the attributes we exchange on that special day: caring, romance, and authenticity. In the spirit of those things that we all appreciate, it makes good sense then that we should exchange valentines day gifts that we might express those feelings more fully.
Perhaps this year you will purchase a special piece of jewelry or an exotic getaway for your significant other. Perhaps you will choose to give several valentines day gifts that capture the different elements of your relationship that you value most. Lastly, perhaps this year you will send a timelessly classic bouquet of valentine's day flowers. Whatever it is you decide to do, do it with the spirit that Valentine himself had. . . with caring, romance, and authenticity.
